CD4022 is a part of the CD4000 IC series. CD4022 is a 4-stage divide-by-8 Johnson counter with 8 decoded outputs and a carry-out bit. These counters are advanced on the positive edge of the clock signal when the clock enable signal is in the logical ‘‘0’’ state. The output of the IC always comes in TTL which makes it easy to interface with other TTL, CMOS, and NMOS devices. The 10 to 8 decoded outputs are normally in the logical ‘‘0’’ state and go to the logical ‘‘1’’ state only at their respective time slot. Each decoded output remains high for 1 full clock cycle. All inputs are protected against static damage by the use of clamping diodes on each input of the IC. The IC offers many features such as high noise immunity, ESD barring, low power dissipation.

What is a Counter?

A Counter is a digital counter that counts 10 digits. It resets for every new clock input. As it can go through 10 unique combinations of output, therefore it is also called a “Decade counter”. A counter can count 0000, 0001, 0010, 1000, 1001, 1010, 1011, 1110, 1111, 0000, and 0001 and so on.
