In this tutorial, we are going to make a 1.2 – 57V Adjustable Stabilized Power Supply Using LM317HVK. This power supply is ideal to use in almost all circuits and devices because it provides both low and very high voltages.

We are using an LM317HVK voltage regulator IC. It is a three-pin positive adjustable regulator IC. Its output voltage is adjustable from 1.2V to 57V with 1.5 amperes of output current. This comes in a standard transistor package which is easily mounted and handled. This IC is very useful and convenient. It only requires external resistors to set the desired output value. Its features include low cost, minimum external parts, thermal overload protection, overload protection, and safe area protection.

Working Explanation

Here we have used a 2 amperes transformer which steps down the mains voltage of 220V to 40V AC. This AC signal will be converted into 59V DC by passing through a bridge rectifier of 3A. A smoothing capacitor of 4700uF is used for smoothing the signal before going into the IC. The adjust pin of this voltage regulator IC is connected with a 10K ohms variable resistor, you can adjust your desired output voltage by it. A 10uF capacitor is used in the regulatory lines to prevent fluctuations of regulation. 1N5404 diodes are used to prevent the capacitor discharge which can damage the IC. There is another capacitor used before the output of this circuit to get a smooth and noise-free output voltage.
