Broken Wire Detector using CD4069 IC

In this article, we are demonstrating a project of Broken Wire Detector. Inside the wall or the plastic insulation is difficult to identify and locate broken wire. A simple circuit break-down wire detector designed with IC CD4069 inverter and LED, sound indicator buzzer visual indicator, is complicated.

Using this simple broken wire detector circuit, the exact location of the broken wire can then be identified (Note: it’s most suitable only for AC power supply wire), and the electromagnetic field (EMF), generated by the AC carrying wire, is detected when the break occurs, this circuit provides no visual alert and sound.

Working Explanation

IC CD4069 is a device that consists of a six-CMOS inverter with 14 pins that are available in various packages. IC CD4069 is available. For all general inverter applications, this IC may be used. These circuits are used for frequency oscillation up to 1KHz.

Resistors R3, R4, and C2 help to oscillate the signals of IC CD4069 and are added to the buzzer element, allowing two LEDs to be connected to pin 12 of CD4069 through the transistor BC547 when the EMF is detected on the wire of testing. This Q1 works here as a switch that makes LED1 glow when EMF is detected and LED2 glow when EMF is absent.

It is operated as an EMF antenna, and the sensitivity of this circuit can vary by a variable resistor VR1. This circuit can also be used with the perfect length (approximately 15 cm wire with spiral). The wire antenna does not directly contact a high AC supply, and you must not touch the wire’s bare hand while testing the AC supply.

Application and Uses

A broken wire detector is used to check wires within the walls which have been broken or disconnected. It detects broken wire as the AC voltage in the wire is detected.
