A power supply is a device that converts one type of electrical power to another, it may also convert a different form of energy into electrical energy.

In this tutorial, we are going to make a Simple 0V to 15V-1A Adjustable Power Supply. This power supply will convert 230V Alternating current into a steady 15 volts DC which are usable by electronic circuits and devices.

We are using a 2N3055 power transistor. It is a semiconductor NPN bipolar power transistor and unlike FETs, it is a current-controlled device in which a small current at the base is used to control a large amount of current at the collector and emitter.

Adjustable Power Supply Circuit

Working Explanation

2N3055 transistor is widely used in power supplies. This circuit is capable of providing an adjustable DC voltage source of 0 to 15 volts with 1A current output. We are using a Zener diode as a voltage regulator but this alone can’t provide a large current source so a transistor in a common base configuration is used

The AC signal is passed through a diode bridge which converts it into a DC. This signal will now pass through a capacitor to cancel any noise. This filtered signal is passed through a voltage regulating section which has a Zener diode and a current limiting resistor, both combined provide a regulated DC voltage. Later it passes through a current amplifier (2N3305) to boost the current to 1A DC. This DC signal then passes through another capacitor to filter any remaining noise before going to the output.
